Renters Insurance Requirements on Storage Units in Arizona

The state of Arizona does not require renter's insurance on self-storage units. Individual storage companies, however, may require renter's insurance. Renter's insurance is recommended for self-storage units, however. There are a number of ways to get renter's insurance on the contents of a self-storage unit. Such insurance can provide a measure of protection if your items are stolen or damaged.

  While the state of Arizona itself does not require people who rent storage units to carry rental insurance, some self-storage companies may have a claluse in their contracts that does require insurance. Others offer insurance automatically as part of your storage contract, though the coverage may be minimal. Be sure to ask when you are shopping around for a storage facility. Most storage facilities do recommend that you insure your stored items, as they cannot completely control for risks such as fire, flood or theft.

Homeowners may find that their homeowner's insurance also offers insurance for items stored offsite, or that the company that services their policy also offers reasonable renter's insurance rates for existing clients. People who rent their home may also be able to get insurance for their storage unit through their existing renter's insurance company. Also check with your auto insurance agency---companies such as Esurance and Geico, for instance, also offer renter's insurance.
